A snack is provided by the Afterschool Program, but if your child has any food allergy, we ask that you please send him/her with a snack from home. While we aim to distribute healthy, organic snacks, we cannot guarantee that they are gluten- and/or nut-free.
We have enlisted PS58 teachers to get your child started on homework, and, per the instructions you provide on the Homework Agreement, supervise its completion. If there are any specific instructions staff members should follow while doing homework with your child, please inform the office and make sure this is reflected on your child’s Homework Agreement.
To ensure that each child receives the full advantage of this important feature of Carroll Kids Aftercare, we’d like to give you an idea of what goes on in each grade, and make a few requests:
Homework at this level is still pretty basic, and not all classes are doing the same work. Our PS58 teachers generally provide activities, do a read-aloud or engage students in simple word or numbers games.
All first graders are assigned weekly packets, therefore it is imperative that they have them in their backpacks every day that they are in Carroll Kids Aftercare. We often find that students have left their packets at home and, therefore, can’t take full advantage of the time. They will also use their book baggies to complete their nightly reading.
All second graders are assigned weekly packets, therefore it is imperative that they have them in their backpacks every day that they are in Carroll Kids Aftercare. We often find that students have left their packets at home and, therefore, can’t take full advantage of the time. This includes their book baggies for reading. They should also bring a book for those rare occasions when they have no homework or have already completed it.
Students should have their homework folders in their backpacks every day that they are in Aftercare. They should also always have their book baggies for those rare occasions when they have no written homework or have already completed it.
This year, the last cycle of every day will be Choice Time among grades. Kindergartners through Grade 2 and Grades 3 through 5 will have a variety of options to choose from, including Arts & Crafts, Sports and Game Time, Book Club, Theatre Games, and more. If your child has a particular passion, this is a chance to organize a club around it. (Almost) anything goes!
Carroll Kids Aftercare offers a variety of “specialty” activities, such as yoga, LEGO, baking, scrap-booking, meditation, and soccer, just to name a few. At the beginning of the school year, children are encouraged to participate in these activities. Later, children are allowed to opt-in or out of the specialty activities. Regardless of how your child is registered — full, partial, or 10-pack — there is no additional charge to participate.
Currently that schedule includes:
Monday: Tea Party (Grades PreK to 1)
Tuesday: Mindfulness & Movement (Grades K to 3); Soccer Super Stars (Grades K to 2)
Wednesday: Soccer Super Stars (Grades 3 to 5)
Thursday: LEGO Club (Grades 2 and 3)
A complete list of scheduled Specialty Activities will be provided in November.
Programming also includes a monthly theme based on major holidays and/or community events; first Friday film (which we announce in advance); and we are open to any activities your children want to pursue. Kids and counselors will brainstorm to schedule special activities, events and field trips throughout the year. A monthly newsletter will give notice of upcoming events.
