Program Structure

Parents understandably want to know, “What exactly will my child be doing in Aftercare?” Here is a breakdown of our daily and weekly schedule.

Daily Routine

  1. We coordinate with your children’s classroom teachers so that those with Aftercare or Enrichment Classes are dismissed directly to the cafeteria at 3pm to 3:10pm, where counselors take attendance and students are provided with a snack. (Enrolled PreK students from the Annex are met there at 2:30pm and escorted to PS58.)
  2. Students are then transitioned to Aftercare CYCLE 1 activities as indicated on the chart below.
  3. At 4:20pm, Aftercare students are escorted to CYCLE 2 activities as indicated on the chart below. (At 4:40pm, students in Enrichment Classes are either transitioned to LATE PARTIAL Aftercare or dismissed to the auditorium.)
  4. At 5:20pm, all Aftercare students are escorted to CYCLE 3 activities as indicated on the chart below.
  5. Remaining Aftercare students transition to the auditorium at 6:10pm for pickup until 6:30pm.

Snack

A snack is provided by the Afterschool Program, but if your child has any food allergy, we ask that you please send him/her with a snack from home. While we aim to distribute healthy, organic snacks, we cannot guarantee that they are gluten- and/or nut-free.

Homework Help

We have enlisted PS58 teachers to get your child started on homework, and, per the instructions you provide on the Homework Agreement, supervise its completion. This year, there will be a French speaking teacher in each group every day. These teachers will be able to help all students with English HW and the DLP students with their French HW.

If there are any specific instructions staff members should follow while doing homework with your child, please inform the office and make sure this is reflected on your child’s Homework Agreement.

To ensure that each child receives the full advantage of this important feature of Carroll Kids Aftercare, we’d like to give you an idea of what goes on in each grade, and make a few requests:

Kindergarden Homework

Homework at this level is still pretty basic and meets twice a week. Since not all classes are doing the same work. Our PS58 teachers generally provide activities; read-aloud or engage students in simple word or numbers games.

First Grade Homework

First graders will have Homework Help twice a week. All first graders are assigned weekly packets, therefore it is imperative that they have them in their backpacks every day that they are in Carroll Kids Aftercare. We often find that students have left their packets at home and, therefore, can’t take full advantage of the time. They will also use their book baggies to complete their nightly reading.

Second Grade Homework

All second graders are assigned weekly packets, therefore it is imperative that they have them in their backpacks every day that they are in Carroll Kids Aftercare. We often find that students have left their packets at home and, therefore, can’t take full advantage of the time. This includes their book baggies for reading. They should also bring a book for those rare occasions when they have no homework or have already completed it.

Third, Fourth, and Fifth Grade Homework

Students should have their homework folders in their backpacks every day that they are in Aftercare. They should also always have their book baggies for those rare occasions when they have no written homework or have already completed it.

Choice Time

The last cycle of every day is Choice Time among grades. Kindergartners through Grade 2 and Grades 3 through 5 will have a variety of options to choose from, including Arts & Crafts, Sports and Game Time, Dungeons and Dragons, Book Club, Theatre Games, and more. If your child has a particular passion, this is a chance to organize a club around it. (Almost) anything goes!

Specialty Activities

This year we are expanding our “specialty” activities to include Rugby, Juggling, Hip Hop and Gardening. At the beginning of the school year, children are encouraged to participate in these activities. Later, children are allowed to opt-in or out of the specialty activities. Regardless of how your child is registered — full, partial, or drop-in — there is no additional charge to participate.

Currently that schedule includes:

Monday: Tea Party; Yoga
Tuesday:  Soccer Super Stars; Spanish (Grade 5 only)
Wednesday: Rugby; Juggling; Put on a Play
Thursday: HipHop; LEGO
Friday: Gardening; Accessorize!

Theme Activities

Programming also includes a monthly theme-based activities tied to major holidays and/or community events. Among monthly standards are: first Friday film (which we announce in advance); Device Day (every 3rd Friday students are invited to bring any electronic device to share during Choice Time); monthly Birthday Celebrations. We will also be offering bi-monthly field trips that students can sign up for. You will get a monthly schedule of trips. We are also open to any activities your children want to pursue. Kids and counselors will brainstorm to schedule special activities, events and field trips throughout the year. A monthly newsletter will give notice of upcoming events.
